~ WhatsApp puts 22,722 Bharat Connect billers inside chat electricity to FASTag — so paying a bill feels as simple as sending a message ~
Mumbai, September 2026: WhatsApp has rolled out Bill payments in India, letting people find, manage and pay everyday household and utility bills without leaving the app. The feature rides on the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network and opens access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories — electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit cards and loan repayments among them.
Users tap the icon on the WhatsApp home screen, pick a category and biller, confirm account details, review the fetched amount, then pay via UPI, debit card or credit card. Previously paid billers surface on Payments Home for one-tap return visits, and multiple accounts under one provider can sit in the same place home, office, family.
The move extends WhatsApp’s India utility stack — phone recharges, metro tickets, government chatbots deeper into high-frequency household money tasks, putting the messenger in closer competition with PhonePe and Google Pay on Bharat Connect rails.
Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head, Meta (India), said: “For millions of Indians, WhatsApp is already the simplest way to stay close to family and friends, talk to businesses, access citizen services, and buy everything from metro tickets to insurance – all without leaving the app. With Bill payments, we’re bringing that same simplicity to one of the most routine tasks in every household. No more juggling apps or tracking multiple due dates. We want to make paying a bill on WhatsApp as effortless as sending a message, and help bring the convenience of digital payments to people across the remotest parts of the country.
Meta says the rollout is gradual across Android and iOS and will reach all users over the coming weeks. For marketers, the signal is clear: WhatsApp is no longer just a messaging and commerce surface — it is building an always-on payments habit inside India’s most open app.
