Rural Gen Z buys 19.1 categories a month

Rural India’s youngest mobile users are no longer a future opportunity. They are the current growth engine, buying across more categories than any other group and reshaping discovery through AI and creators, finds the WPP Media-Kantar Rural Barometer 2026.

01 · Gen Z widens the basket

Drawing on June 2026 data across 12 state groupings and compared with February 2025, the report shows Gen Z aged 18-29 now make up 33% of rural mobile users. They purchase 19.1 product categories a month, up from 17.0, a wider basket than millennials at 18.0 and over-45s at 16.7.

The growth is concentrated in discretionary and wellness categories. Gen Z’s convenience-food basket rose 27% to 5.9 categories, health and wellness grew 36%, and personal grooming grew 9% while staying flat overall in rural India.

02 · Digital discovery: AI and creators

This cohort spends 115 minutes a day online versus a rural average of 93, and 39.4% shop online compared with 29.6% overall. Rural e-commerce has nearly tripled since 2022. More than half of rural consumers—52.6%—already use at least one AI feature, rising to 60.4% among Gen Z. The most common uses are practical: searching by product image at 29.3%, image filters at 25.5% and voice-to-text at 23.2%.

Influencers have moved from entertainment to the consideration set. One in three rural adults follows creators, climbing to 40.9% among Gen Z. Among followers, 77.3% trust creator advice and 55.5% act after viewing. But the next step is usually research, not an instant cart: 31.2% ask family or friends, 27.5% search online and 12.4% buy directly, at 14.7% among Gen Z.

03 · Women are a second growth lane

  • Gen Z: 19.1 categories a month, 115 minutes online daily, 60.4% AI use and 40.9% follow creators.
  • Rural women: 18.4 categories a month against 18.1 for men; online shopping rose from 20% to 29%, and 14.4% of female followers buy after viewing versus 11.1% of male followers.
  • Language: 83% call local-language content essential; Hindi reaches 63.9%, but only 46.9% watch in their own regional language.

Rural women now buy 18.4 categories a month against 18.1 for men after adding 1.3 categories versus 0.8. Once engaged with creators, they convert more: 14.4% of female followers bought after viewing content, against 11.1% of male followers.

“Rural India is not a single, uniform market, and the data increasingly reflects that reality,” said Ajay Mehta, EVP Media Solutions, WPP Media India.

04 · What brand leaders should do

The report argues for moving beyond broad rural stereotypes. Segment by generation and gender; build discovery journeys that assume research before purchase; design for image search, voice-to-text and creators; and localise beyond Hindi. Younger consumers, women and creator-led discovery are distinct growth lanes, not one mass market.
