Signify’s Philips Diwali Film Spans Three Generations

Signify’s #HarDiwaliPhilipsWaali film traces Philips lighting across the 1970s, 2000s and today, putting generational trust before product features.

Philips Lights Three Generations of Diwali

Signify has gone generational for Diwali this year. The new #HarDiwaliPhilipsWaali campaign for Philips lighting follows young couples marking their first Diwali in a new home across three periods: the 1970s, the 2000s and the present day.

01 · From switchboards to voice commands

The film turns the product story into a time-lapse. Traditional bulbs and switches give way to decorative lighting, then to ambient, app- and voice-controlled smart lighting. The premise is that the first Diwali keeps evolving, but trust in Philips does not. The campaign line makes the point directly: “Pehli Diwali badalti rahi. Roshni badalti rahi. Par bharosa Philips ka, har generation ke saath raha.”

Nikhil Gupta, head of strategy and marketing at Signify, Greater India, locates the insight in the ritual: “Diwali is a time when families come together and create memories that last for years.” Homes and lighting have changed, he adds, but the role of light in bringing people together remains the same.

02 · The strategy beneath the nostalgia

For a technology brand, the easy route would be a feature-led film about smart controls. Signify flips that. It treats product evolution as evidence of a larger promise: Philips is the constant while the category keeps shifting. That is a trust-first move, not a spec-sheet one.

  • Three time periods make the category shift visible inside one story.
  • A single repeated idea carries trust across generations.
  • The setting, a first Diwali in a new home, gives the product an emotional job.

There is a reason this matters beyond one festive film. Smart lighting shifts the purchase from a consumable bulb to a considered home ecosystem. That change raises new questions around apps, compatibility and control. By leaning on a three-generation relationship, Signify lowers the perceived risk of buying into a Philips smart home: the new technology inherits the old trust.

03 · From film to trial

The campaign does not stop at the film. Signify has tapped newly married and young couple creators to show festive home makeovers using Philips smart lighting, including ambient TV lighting, dining-area lighting and accent lights. The #HarDiwaliPhilipsWaali Community Contest invites people to share photos and videos of their festive lighting, with selected participants winning a Philips Light Theatre home-entertainment system. Philips Smart Light Hubs and retail partner stores will also run festive displays and interactive smart-lighting experiences.

The extension is where the strategy gets practical: the film builds the trust, creators show the use cases, retail offers the trial and the contest harvests the proof.

04 · Marketing take

Legacy brands in fast-moving categories often chase the newest feature first. Signify’s Philips campaign runs the story the other way: anchor the innovation in a recurring family moment and let the decades make the argument. That is a template CMOs can refit for any brand with history and a product roadmap.
