AJIO's astronaut unlocks bigger Diwali deals from orbit

Diwali sale clutter is thick: every commerce app is shouting the same discount language. AJIO’s latest campaign, crafted with 22feet (part of Omnicom Advertising India), cuts through by turning Ghar Wapsi into a game played from orbit.

01 · A homecoming with a twist

The campaign follows a mystery Indian astronaut spending the festive season away from home, aboard a mock International Space Station. As he passes over different Indian cities, shoppers tracking his journey unlock exclusive Ghar Wapsi Deals, and the offers grow bigger the closer he gets.

The digital film teases the astronaut’s identity through witty exchanges and playful clues. The experience then stretches into AJIO’s app and website, alongside influencer collaborations and meme-led content designed to pull more shoppers into the conversation.

02 · Why it works: discovery beats discount

For CMOs, the interesting part is the mechanic, not the mascot. AJIO reframes a discount as a discovery. Shoppers aren’t handed a coupon; they track a trigger, anticipate a moment, and unlock a reward that scales with proximity. That creates variable reward—the same intermittent payoff loop that keeps people checking notifications and feeds.

The frame will feel familiar to anyone who watched location-based games turn map movement into daily habits. AJIO has essentially imported the ‘something is coming to your area’ trigger and pointed it at commerce; the payoff isn’t a creature, it’s a bigger discount.

AJIO CMO Arpan Biswas frames it simply: the brand wants to create “moments of excitement, curiosity and discovery” so festive shopping feels like more than browsing offers. For 22feet’s Executive Creative Director Shyam Nair, the insight was that even an astronaut “couldn’t come home, but he would be passing over ours”—and you don’t turn up for Diwali empty-handed.

The mechanics worth borrowing:

  • Attach offers to a moving, trackable trigger rather than a static banner.
  • Scale rewards with proximity or progress so each check-in feels new.
  • Use humour to make an outlandish premise feel warm, not gimmicky.

03 · The takeaway for brand leaders

The timing matters. Diwali is one of India’s highest-intent shopping windows, and standing out requires more than a bigger banner. AJIO’s orbit game gives people a reason to return to the app between purchases—an engagement loop most Diwali sale banners don’t create.

The risk is letting the game overshadow the offer. The discipline is keeping the deal front and centre while the astronaut supplies the fun. As festive campaigns flood the feed, the ones remembered are the ones that felt like an event. AJIO has built its event around a simple, familiar truth: everyone wants to come home with something.
