Shalini Saraswat to lead Pantene India

Procter & Gamble has elevated Shalini Saraswat to Brand Director and Business Head for Pantene India. The appointment is the latest step in a P&G career that began with a summer internship on Tide India in 2020 and produced a pre-placement offer.

Saraswat takes charge of one of the company’s flagship hair care brands after more than five years of brand management across laundry and hair care. She most recently led Head & Shoulders India as Senior Brand Manager from April 2024.

01 · The ladder, in brief

  • 2020: Summer intern, Tide India — led to a pre-placement offer
  • May 2021–April 2022: Brand Manager, Tide India
  • May 2022–April 2024: Senior Brand Manager, Tide India
  • April 2024–November 2026: Senior Brand Manager, Head & Shoulders India
  • November 2026: Brand Director and Business Head, Pantene India

02 · R&D roots before the brand P&L

Before P&G, Saraswat spent three years at Unilever in research and development. She began as an Executive Trainee in Global R&D and later served as Associate, Home Care Global R&D in Mumbai. Her portfolio there included global design for tea and beverage brands such as Red Label and Brooke Bond, regional hair care design for Dove, TRESemmé and Clinic Plus, and packaging for home care detergents including Surf Excel.

03 · Why a laundry-trained leader gets the Pantene brief

On paper, moving a Tide and Head & Shoulders operator to Pantene looks like a straightforward category shift. What makes the appointment interesting is the blend: commercial ownership of two large P&G brands, plus three years seeing hair care and home care from the product side at Unilever. In India’s competitive hair care market, Pantene trades against Dove, TRESemmé and Clinic Plus — brands Saraswat has worked on from the formulation angle, not just the advertising one.

That dual literacy is a real asset when a business head has to connect product claims, innovation pipelines and brand positioning in one conversation.

04 · What marketing teams should take from this

For CMOs and marketing leaders, the appointment is a case study in deliberate talent building. P&G has moved a proven operator across laundry and hair care before handing her the business head role. The signals worth copying are simple: rotate high-potential marketers across categories, and treat product-side experience as a leadership credential rather than a detour.

A brand leader who can hold both the lab conversation and the shelf conversation is still uncommon. Pantene India just got one.
