Zomato’s Saif Ali Khan Diwali ad turns flat WOW into gifting

Zomato has launched a digital-first Diwali campaign with Saif Ali Khan, and the brief is clear from the first frame: most Diwali hampers are not really about Diwali. Towels, bedsheets, soaps and crockery make their annual appearance, and the food-delivery brand wants to put edible festive gifting back at the centre.

01 · A flat ‘WOW’ that finally means it

The film, conceptualised in house, builds the entire story on the actor’s signature drawl. Saif receives a series of familiar gifts and greets each one with the same deadpan “WOW”. Nothing changes in his expression until a delivery partner in Zomato’s red t-shirt arrives with a curated hamper. That is the moment the “WOW” sounds like he actually means it.

The contrast does the work. Zomato is not saying generic gifts are bad; it is simply showing that the same word can be empty or full of intent depending on what is at the door.

02 · Why the insight lands

Festive advertising is loud in India, and most brands default to sentiment, sparkle or star power without a product reason. Zomato’s move is different in two ways. First, it treats Saif Ali Khan’s “WOW” as a pre-existing audio asset, so the campaign starts with recall rather than trying to build it. Second, it attaches that recall to a real purchase: curated hampers from restaurant partners, not props.

“Nothing beats a hamper from a mithai shop, bakery, or restaurant for Diwali. This festive season, we’re super stoked to be collaborating with the incorrigible Saif Ali Khan to bring that truth home – in a way that only Saif can.”

Being digital-first also suits the format. The ad is now live on Zomato’s Instagram and YouTube, where a short, repetitive gag can travel without the heavy media weight of a television cut. For CMOs, that is a useful reminder: a distinctive asset like Saif’s “WOW” is built for short-form attention spans.

03 · From food delivery to festive gifting

For a food-delivery platform, this is more than a holiday gag. It moves Zomato from being the place you order dinner to being a participant in Diwali gifting—a habit that usually belongs to sweet shops, retail chains and e-commerce marketplaces. By putting restaurant partners’ hampers at the centre, the campaign gives the delivery fleet a new seasonal job.

  • Reuse a signature phrase or sound your celebrity already owns; don’t ask them to create a new one.
  • Let repetition and contrast show the category problem instead of explaining it.
  • Close the loop in the same film: Zomato’s hampers are now orderable on the app.

The range includes mithai hampers, assorted hampers, dessert hampers and chocolate hampers, pushing Zomato beyond meals into festive gifting. That matters as food-delivery platforms fight for occasions, not just daily orders.

04 · One-line marketing take

When a celebrity already carries a sound the audience knows, use it as your mnemonic and let the product moment change its meaning.
