25-year brand leader joins DirectX as SVP strategy head

DirectX has appointed Ipsita Johri Rane as Senior Vice President, Strategy and Head, Brand Solutions. She brings more than 25 years across marketing, communications, brand building and entrepreneurship, with earlier roles at The Walt Disney Company India, Sony Pictures and TBWA India.

On the surface this is a senior people move. Read for the brief, though, and it is a signal: DirectX wants its brand solutions to start with consumer insight and business problems, not just campaign visibility.

01 · A brief built for behaviour, not visibility

Rane put the shift simply. “Brands need more than visibility or engagement in local markets,” she said. They need to understand what will influence consumer behaviour, where the opportunity lies, and how that opportunity translates into meaningful action.

That is a useful distinction for India’s brand leaders. An activation brief asks where the brand should show up and what might make people notice. A brand-problem brief asks which consumer belief or behaviour has to change for the brand to grow.

  • Activation-first thinking leads with reach, footfall or engagement metrics.
  • Problem-led thinking leads with the behaviour change that drives business outcomes.
  • Strategy connects the two by using culture and context to decide which behaviour to influence first.

Rane’s stated focus on people, culture and context suggests DirectX is leaning into the second approach — and asking clients to do the same.

02 · What the résumé brings

Her background spans entertainment and agency worlds: Disney India, Sony Pictures and TBWA India. That mix often builds a reflex for cultural moments, fandom and content, rather than media schedules alone. For clients, that can mean brand solutions that feel native to how people actually experience culture.

03 · What CMOs can do with this

The appointment is a good prompt for any marketing team. Before the next campaign is signed off, test whether the brief names the real problem or just the activation. If the objective stops at “visibility in a local market,” go one layer deeper: which audience, which behaviour and which cultural moment will create business value?

Technology still matters in Rane’s framing, but it plays the role of enabler — it turns insight into experience. It is not the idea itself.

The move lands at a time when Indian marketers are under pressure to show that every campaign maps to a business metric. A senior strategy hire dedicated to brand solutions is one way agencies and platforms are responding: less selling of formats, more solving of problems.
