68% pick tea time over Pujo gifts

Tata Tea Gold has taken Durga Pujo advertising in a quieter direction. Its new campaign, Ekshathei Gold — Being Together is Gold, argues that time with loved ones can matter more than anything that comes in a festive shopping bag.

Durga Pujo is a homecoming moment in West Bengal, and a crowded window for brands. But Tata Tea Gold’s angle is smaller and more specific: it sells the pause, not the leaf.

01 · The idea behind the film

The campaign film moves between two ages. As a young boy, the son wishes Pujo would never end so his mother would not have to return to work. Years later, as an adult, he makes a similar wish — for his mother to stay just a little longer. A cup of Tata Tea Gold is the bridge, creating a reason for one more conversation.

The story is not accidental. It is built on a consumer study by Unomer across West Bengal.

  • 68% of consumers aged 25-40 would prefer their loved ones to take time off for tea and conversation rather than receive a premium festive gift or shopping voucher.
  • 83% feel Pujo ends before they have spent enough quality time with family, every year or most years.
  • 94% say tea gives their family a reason to pause and spend time together.

02 · Why the positioning works

For brand leaders, this is a clean lesson in insight-led festive marketing. Rather than claiming a superior blend or a bigger discount, Tata Tea Gold names a feeling its audience already has: Pujo is full of ritual but short on presence. The product becomes the enabler of that paused moment, not the hero.

This is emotional differentiation. When products are functionally similar, the brand that names an unspoken consumer feeling earns attention. The ritual of tea keeps the insight grounded instead of letting it slip into sentiment.

Sharat Verma, president, Packaged Beverages and Organic India at Tata Consumer Products, frames the campaign as a celebration of ordinary moments. “Pujo gives us many reasons to come together, but often not enough time to simply be together,” he says. “Time Together is Gold.”

03 · From emotion to shelf

The idea extends beyond the film. Tata Tea Gold has introduced four specially designed packs featuring Pujo moments such as dhunuchi dance, sindoor khela and family celebrations. Packaging becomes another media channel, carrying the campaign’s emotional idea to the moment of purchase.

Sandipan Bhattacharyya, chief creative officer at Monks, says the brief was to turn a simple cup of tea into a reminder of slow, shared moments. He adds that the most valuable gift is not wrapped in boxes; it is measured in time.

04 · What marketers can do

The template here is portable. Start with a documented consumer tension rather than a product feature. Choose a single ritual — tea, conversation, coming home — and let it carry the emotion. Then extend the idea into packaging and retail so the campaign does not stop at the film.

In a festival market crowded with loud offers, the brand that names an unspoken feeling can win on relevance rather than price. Tata Tea Gold is betting that presence, not presents, is the premium.
