Josy Paul takes creative charge across BBDO Group India

Josy Paul, the creative leader behind some of India’s most awarded brand campaigns, has been elevated to Chairman and Group Chief Creative Officer of BBDO Group India. The announcement on October 9, 2026 expands his earlier role as Chairman of BBDO India: Paul will now set the creative vision across BBDO India, Ulka and Mudra under Omnicom Advertising.

01 · The leader and the work

Paul co-founded BBDO India in 2008 with a deceptively simple operating philosophy: “Create acts, not ads.” Rather than starting with a message, the agency starts with a cultural intervention—something the audience should do, feel or rethink after the campaign. That framing has produced some of India’s most recognisable work:

  • Ariel’s “Share The Load” — turned household laundry into a gender-equality conversation.
  • Whisper’s “Touch The Pickle” — challenged taboos around menstruation.
  • Gillette’s “Women Against Lazy Stubble” — took on lazy stereotypes disguised as grooming habits.
  • Mirinda’s “Release The Pressure” — opened a conversation on mental health.

The results are not just cultural. The work has won more than 25 Cannes Lions, including a Grand Prix and multiple Golds. Ariel’s “Share The Load” was ranked the world’s most effective campaign by WARC twice in a row, making it a rare case where creative fame and long-term effectiveness sit on the same balance sheet.

02 · Why this move matters now

The elevation follows Jitender Dabas’s appointment as CEO of BBDO Group India in February 2026, after the Omnicom–IPG merger. By putting a single creative leader over BBDO India, Ulka and Mudra, the group is signalling that integration is not just structural—it is cultural. Dabas framed the choice in institutional terms: “He is an institution in himself,” he said, adding that Paul’s enthusiasm for people, ideas and possibilities makes him the right partner to shape the group’s creative ambition.

Paul himself used the language of scale. “I see it as creating a bigger room for creativity,” he said, while adding that he still feels like a beginner. That tone matters: it keeps a group-wide mandate close to the work, rather than distant from it.

03 · What brand leaders should take from this

For CMOs and brand teams, this is more than an agency story. It is a reminder that the most effective campaigns are built on a question of behaviour, not a category claim. Marketers can borrow the same test: instead of asking “what should this ad say?”, ask “what should this campaign change?”. Then measure it the way BBDO India’s work has been measured—through long-term effectiveness studies, not just media scores. And when working across agencies, the lesson is to appoint a single creative owner who protects the idea across every unit, rather than letting each agency settle the question separately.

The marketing take: creative leadership works best when it is accountable for cultural change and business results in the same conversation.
