~ The News Minute frames 109 legal challenges as ‘109 not out’, then asks readers for 200 new Rs 500/month subscriptions to fund the fight ~
Bengaluru, September 2026: The News Minute (TNM) has turned its own litigation load into a subscription campaign. In an email to readers, founder and CEO Vignesh Vellore disclosed that the Bengaluru digital newsroom is facing 85 grievances, 21 civil cases and 3 criminal cases — 109 legal challenges in all — and reframed the tally as cricket-style resilience: “109 not out.”
Cases span the southern states and Delhi. Rather than treat the figure as a setback, TNM positions it as proof of the risk cost of independent reporting — and says it continues to stand by its reporters and newsroom. Vellore contrasts a cricket side’s 11 players with TNM’s “thousands of loyal subscribers” who back the journalism.
The commercial ask is specific: 200 new recurring subscribers at Rs 500 a month to help fund legal battles the subscriber-funded, journalism-first outfit says it had not fully anticipated. Payments are accepted via cards, UPI or bank transfer, lowering conversion friction while linking the subscription directly to editorial defence — not just content access.
The close carries the metaphor through: whether the number hits 109, 200 or 300, TNM says it will still “not get OUT.” Transparency, community and acquisition land in one message — litigation as narrative hook, independence as emotion, subscription as the reader’s tangible stake.
Marketing take: Turning a legal caseload into a cricket-score brand line converts disclosure into demand — TNM sells resilience and reader agency, not a paywall, and makes Rs 500/month feel like defending the newsroom, not buying an article.
