JioHotstar turns ad breaks into shoppable carts

JioHotstar has turned the traditional video ad break into a checkout moment. On 27 October 2026, the platform announced StreamToCart Ads, an interactive in-stream advertising format powered by Instamart.

The format lets viewers discover products, browse an offering and add items to a cart inside the streaming player—without pausing playback, leaving the player or switching apps. It is an attempt to compress the distance between brand storytelling and purchase.

01 · From awareness to action

Video advertising has historically done the heavy lifting on brand recognition and emotional resonance, while the transaction happened later on a separate retail platform. StreamToCart Ads brings those stages closer by letting a viewer act on purchase intent while still watching content.

Bhaskar Ramesh, head – entertainment sales, digital, JioStar, said the launch is about “transforming the ad break into an opportunity for viewers to discover and purchase products seamlessly”. For advertisers, that means premium video’s scale and impact can sit next to immediate commerce.

02 · The metric shifts from click to cart

The format also introduces a more direct measurement path. Instead of leaning primarily on video completion rates and click-through rates, brands can track a consumer from an advertising impression through to an add-to-cart event.

JioHotstar is positioning this for FMCG, packaged foods, beauty and consumer electronics. The move leans into quick commerce’s adoption: a Datum Intelligence study cited in the announcement found half of online shoppers place at least five orders a month through quick-commerce platforms.

03 · Why this audience is built for it

JioHotstar’s internal data makes the commerce case plain. The platform reports that 83% of its viewers identify as active shopping enthusiasts, and 60% of platform-driven conversions originate from new and dormant shoppers.

  • Ad breaks become interactive shopping sessions rather than interruptions.
  • Campaign success can be measured at the add-to-cart event, not just the view.
  • The format plugs into Swiggy’s Instamart fulfilment footprint.

The combination of a shopper-heavy audience and an in-player cart answers a long-standing advertiser complaint: premium video reaches millions, but proving that it moves product has been hard. StreamToCart gives brand teams a behavioural signal they can optimise against.

04 · The retail media signal

The launch reflects a deeper convergence of streaming, advertising and retail media. With more than 500 million monthly average users and 300,000-plus hours of programming across 19 languages, JioHotstar has the scale to test whether entertainment-led discovery can reliably produce commerce-led outcomes.

For brand leaders, the signal is clear: streaming ad formats are moving beyond engagement metrics and toward shoppable, attributable behaviour.
