JioHotstar turns ad breaks into Instamart storefronts
JioHotstar launches StreamToCart Ads powered by Instamart, letting viewers browse and build a cart inside the video player without pausing.

JioHotstar has put an Instamart store inside its advertising breaks. The streaming platform has launched StreamToCart Ads, an in-stream format that lets viewers discover, browse and add products to a shopping cart without pausing the video or leaving the player.
01 · How the format works
When a StreamToCart ad appears, viewers get a native overlay rather than a passive spot. They can move through products and build a cart inside the streaming window, while the content keeps playing. The format is powered by Instamart, so the commercial layer comes with quick-commerce fulfillment attached.
“We are transforming the ad break into an opportunity for viewers to discover and purchase products seamlessly within their viewing experience.”
Bhaskar Ramesh, Head – Entertainment Sales, Digital at JioStar, describes the launch as a move to bring brand storytelling and measurable business outcomes closer together. For media buyers, that is the cue: this is built to deliver a purchase action, not just a view.
02 · Why CMOs should care
For years, upper-funnel video built emotional affinity on the big screen while the actual sale happened elsewhere. StreamToCart Ads collapse that gap. A premium, full-screen story can now carry intent all the way to a cart, within the same environment that generated it.
That turns a brand-building medium into a conversion medium. It also shifts the marketing question from “how many people saw this?” to “how many people started a purchase while watching?” The distinction matters for program planning and creative evaluation.
03 · The experience trade-off to watch
The promise is seamless commerce; the risk is that an ad break that tries to sell too hard could feel intrusive. The design matters: a native overlay that respects the viewing experience is more likely to convert than a hard interruptive prompt. CMOs should test whether the format lifts action without turning off brand perception.
Instamart’s role is the understated part. Quick-commerce fulfillment means the leap from cart to doorstep is already solved, so the ad is not just a display unit—it is tied to real inventory and delivery. That makes the format a stronger fit for impulse and replenishment categories than for considered, high-ticket products.
04 · What to prepare before booking
This format rewards advertisers that arrive commerce-ready. Before testing, teams should treat the ad break as a shelf, not a slot.
- Design creative for product-level discovery, not just a final call to action.
- Sync product feeds, pricing and availability with the commerce team.
- Set measurement around add-to-cart, cart value and conversion, not just reach and view-through rate.
- Start with high-consideration categories where intent is already high.
05 · The wider signal
JioHotstar is framing this as the opening chapter of a broader content-commerce integration across India’s digital economy. If the format scales, premium CTV could start behaving like a retail media network: full attention, premium context and an active purchase interface in one place.
Brands that prepare their product data, creative and measurement now will be ready to capture demand at the moment of highest attention.
