Fortune Besan borrows a grandmother's authority

Fortune Besan has handed its brand voice to the one person many Indian consumers already trust implicitly: a grandmother. In a new campaign for the staple, actor Neena Gupta plays an elder in conversation with her Gen Z granddaughter, a food influencer, about why desi chana remains essential in Indian cooking.

Created by Mudra Ahmedabad (BBDO Group) and built on the line ‘Desi Chana Se Bana’, the film will run across Hindi-speaking markets, including Maharashtra.

01 · The thinking behind the film

The category problem is familiar: besan is a low-involvement, high-frequency purchase where consumers often default to habit, loose stock or the same pack. A brand message therefore has to create a reason to choose, not just a reason to notice.

Fortune’s answer is ingredient provenance. The campaign treats desi chana as a purchase criterion passed through generations rather than a technical specification. “Food choices are often shaped by habits and wisdom passed down through generations,” Jignesh Shah, head of media and digital at AWL Agri Business Limited, said in the announcement.

Shekhar Pandey, vice president and head at Mudra Ahmedabad BBDO Group, framed the creative idea as a bridge between old and new: while the way people cook and discover recipes has changed, “the wisdom behind choosing the right ingredients often comes from our mothers.”

02 · Why the casting does the work

The grandmother-granddaughter pairing is a trust transfer. Neena Gupta supplies cultural authority and warmth; the food-influencer granddaughter anchors the story in contemporary food discovery. The brand sits in the middle as the product both generations can agree on.

This is a useful template for heritage categories. Instead of leading with price or pack claims, Fortune Besan borrows authority from the family kitchen and modernises it with a digital-native character.

03 · What brand teams should watch

  • Brand: Fortune Besan from AWL Agri Business Limited.
  • Agency: Mudra Ahmedabad (BBDO Group).
  • Proposition: ‘Desi Chana Se Bana’.
  • Creative vehicle: A grandmother and a Gen Z food influencer granddaughter.
  • Media footprint: Hindi-speaking markets, including Maharashtra.

The film is a reminder that in commodity categories, the fight is rarely won on spec sheets. It is won on belief, memory and the voices consumers already trust.

Marketing take

When your product is a familiar staple, borrow authority from the oldest source your audience still listens to — the family kitchen.
