The Cyber Cafe Closed, and Nobody Noticed
From rationed data and cyber cafe queues to an always-on pocket, the everyday shifts that reshaped India's connected decade after 2016.

In 2016, the neighbourhood cyber cafe was still a destination: a shared screen, a timed session, a careful decision about which songs, assignments or application forms were worth the minutes. At home, the family’s data was rationed – checked before a video call, switched off after a download, parcelled through coupons and packs. Then the frame changed.
Jio launched in 2016 with the Welcome Offer: unlimited 4G data, voice, video and apps, according to Reliance Industries. The company reached 100 million subscribers within 170 days of launch, as company-reported in the Reliance Industries Integrated Annual Report 2016-17. The question India asked began to move from ‘How much does data cost?’ to ‘What can we do with data?’
01 · From the counter to the pocket
The cyber cafe didn’t disappear overnight, but its central role did. The shared computer became a personal screen. The timed session became an idle scroll. The queue for a seat became a group on one phone, watching a cricket finale or a wedding reel together.
What changed was not just the network. It was the sense that connection is always on. A phone in every pocket could handle what once needed a trip: a video call home, a map to a new address, a payment to the kirana, a class, a film, a live event.
02 · Small habits, big reset
- Then: Rationed data, coupons and careful countdowns. Now: Unlimited access that runs in the background.
- Then: A cyber cafe for a scanned document or a job form. Now: The phone, the app and the payment in one place.
- Then: ‘Is there enough data for a call?’ Now: Calls, reels, maps and work happen without the question.
- Then: Connection was an event. Now: Connection is the default.
Reliance Jio Infocomm reported 524 million+ customers as of March 2026. That scale is not only a network story; it is a habit story. The audience marketers meet today does not think of data as a monthly anxiety. It treats data as a background layer for work, study, entertainment, payments and family life.
Jio’s ecosystem now spans connectivity, entertainment, commerce, payments, devices, cloud and AI, Reliance Industries said at its 48th AGM in August 2025. Its stated priorities extend from connecting every Indian and digitising businesses to bringing digital services home and putting ‘AI Everywhere for Everyone.’
03 · The marketing read
For brand leaders, the shift rewrites the brief. When access was scarce, marketing explained how to connect cheaply. When access is assumed, marketing has to earn attention within an already connected day. The job is no longer to announce that something is online; it is to make it useful, remembered or shared in the moments that connection creates.
The cyber cafe era left a useful lesson: India did not just adopt a network. It changed where daily life happens. Marketing take: When a resource becomes invisible, the value moves from access to attention.
