Josy Paul to lead AAAI's first creative council

The Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) has set up its first creative council, with BBDO Group India Chairman Josy Paul appointed to lead the new body.

The launch lands as traditional agencies try to prove their strategic worth against automation, performance-led media buying and the shift of budgets into fast-moving digital channels.

01 · Why this council now

The association wants to restore creative judgement as the core of an agency’s business case, rather than one more line item under pricing pressure. It also plans to bring institutional backing to independent shops and regional agencies that sit outside the main metro hubs.

  • Mentorship programmes for creative leaders and agency teams
  • Cross-disciplinary workshops drawing on technology, cinema and design
  • Collaborative forums that connect independent and regional agencies with senior practitioners

Paul’s record gives the council a high-profile face. His work includes Procter & Gamble’s long-running Ariel ‘Share the Load’ platform, and he carries international award credibility into a market dealing with fee erosion and shorter client retainers.

02 · The commercial test

For CMOs and brand teams, the more interesting question is not whether the council meets, but whether creative advocacy can change commercial outcomes. Marketing budgets are tilting toward performance-led digital, quick-commerce platforms and in-house content teams. That pressure has made long-term brand building harder to defend, not easier.

The council is a voluntary advisory body, so it carries no direct mandate over agency pricing or client procurement. Its real influence will show in two places: whether it can help agencies prove the financial return of long-term brand building, and whether independent and regional shops gain access to the same craft and senior networks as the large groups.

03 · What brand leaders should watch

If the council works, it should raise the standard of strategic and creative advice brand teams receive across India, especially outside the major metropolitan hubs. If it stalls, it becomes another trade-body announcement. The proof will be in the work that follows and the talent agencies manage to keep.

For marketers, this is a reminder of the classic brand building versus performance tension. Patient, distinctive creative compounds over years; the work under budget pressure is often the activation that can be measured this week. An agency body that helps both sides see that distinction, with credible effectiveness evidence, will be more useful than one that simply celebrates craft.
