VETO stacks 300+ hours of live sport into festive season

VETO, the subscription-free OTT platform, is betting that live sport can do what on-demand libraries often cannot: get Indian households to show up at a fixed time, together, in front of the TV. Its new VETO Sports Carnival packs more than 300 hours of live action into October and November, timed to run through Dussehra, Diwali and Chhath Puja.

The event is not a single tournament; it is a multi-sport calendar spanning cricket, football, weightlifting and tennis, and it leans on VETO’s earlier acquisition of Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup rights.

01 · The line-up

  • International ODI tri-series: October 18–31
  • IWF World Senior Championships: October 27–November 8
  • Test matches: November 9–13 and 17–21
  • SAFF Championship: November 5–17
  • Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs: November 20–22
  • Davis Cup Finals: November 24–29

That gives VETO a near-continuous live sports window from mid-October to end-November, rather than a one-off event. The platform already carries more than 60 live TV channels across 12 languages and 10 genres; sports becomes the high-attention layer on top.

02 · Why festive timing is the strategy

Festive season in India is prime family viewing time, and live sport adds a rare appointment-viewing mechanic to a subscription-free service. Ritu Dhawan, Managing Director of VETO OTT, said: “Live sports have the ability to bring people together, create appointment viewing and build a lasting connection between audiences and a platform.”

For VETO, the bet is that accessible international sport—not paywalled behind a subscription—can pull connected TV audiences to the big screen and give the platform a distinct reason to be opened during a cluttered media period.

03 · What it means for brand leaders

Live sports carried on CTV tend to deliver the co-viewing and attention that advertisers find hard to buy elsewhere. For CMOs planning festive campaigns, a 300-hour free sports slate creates a long window for adjacency, sponsorship or contextual messaging aimed at family audiences.

  • Treat the window as a multi-week presence, not a one-day burst.
  • Match creative to the mindset: appointment viewing at home, often shared.
  • Watch how VETO converts this free sports push into habitual platform use after the carnival ends.

The bigger question is whether a subscription-free platform can turn live sports into retention, not just festive sampling. If it works, expect more OTT players to use event-based sports as a lower-friction acquisition tool.

Marketing take

Free live sport is a reach and attention strategy—use it while the festive family is already in front of the screen.
